The Click Is Disappearing: What Zero-Click Search Means for Your Business in 2026
Most Google searches now end without a single click. Here is what that shift means for local and growing businesses, and why being the answer matters more than ranking.
For twenty years the deal was simple. Rank on Google, earn the click, win the customer. That deal is quietly being rewritten.
Today most searches end right on the results page, answered by Google itself, and the businesses that still get chosen are the ones Google and AI assistants trust enough to quote. Here is what zero-click search and AI Overviews mean for SEO in 2026, and what a local business should do about it.

58% fewerclicks for the top ranking page when an AI Overview appears
35% moreorganic clicks for brands cited inside AI Overviews
1. Zero-Click Search: Two Out of Three Searches Now End Without a Click
SparkToro's 2026 study, built on Similarweb's desktop and mobile clickstream panel, found that 68.01% of U.S. Google searches in the first four months of 2026 ended without a click to any website. In 2024 the figure was 60.45%.
In Canada the same study measured 63.8% zero-click searches.
SparkToro is careful to note that its historic numbers come from different data panels, so long range comparisons are not perfectly like for like. The direction, though, has been consistent for a decade.
2. Google AI Overviews Are Taking the Top Spot's Clicks
The biggest driver is the AI summary sitting above the results. Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords and found that when an AI Overview appears, the top ranking page now earns about 58% fewer clicks than it would otherwise.
Pew Research Center, tracking the real browsing of 900 U.S. adults, saw people click a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% without one. Links inside the summary itself were clicked on just 1% of visits.
A randomized field experiment published on SSRN in 2026 points the same way: when AI Overviews appeared, outbound organic clicks fell by 39.8%.
Ranking first still matters. It just no longer guarantees the visit.
3. SEO in 2026: The Brands Being Quoted Are Winning
Here is the part most businesses miss. Seer Interactive analyzed 3,119 informational queries across 42 organizations and found that brands cited inside AI Overviews earned 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands that were not cited (Search Engine Land).
Seer's April 2026 update also showed organic click rates on AI Overview queries recovering from 1.3% in December 2025 to 2.4% in February 2026.
The landscape is still moving, which is exactly why the businesses paying attention now will be ahead when it settles.
4. AI Search Assistants Send Fewer Visitors, but Often Better Ones
ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini are becoming a second front door. Seer's case study of one site measured a 15.9% conversion rate from ChatGPT visitors against 1.76% from Google organic. Ahrefs reported that AI search drove 12.1% of its signups from just 0.5% of its traffic.
We will be honest about the other side too. A peer reviewed study of 973 ecommerce sites found ChatGPT referrals still converted below Google organic search and made up less than 0.2% of sessions.
The takeaway is not that AI traffic is magic. It is that people who reach you through an AI answer have often already decided you are worth a look. That is also why owning your first-party data matters more as tracking gets thinner.
5. What Zero-Click Search Means for a Local Business
When fewer people click, every element Google and AI tools can read about you does more of the selling: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your listings, the clarity of your site, and whether your expertise is written in a way a machine can confidently repeat.
If you are starting from scratch, our complete guide to local SEO for small businesses, the Map Pack playbook and the NAP citation blueprint cover the foundations.
Do
- Treat your Google Business Profile and reviews as a storefront, not a formality.
- Measure leads and calls, not just traffic, so a dip in clicks does not hide a rise in customers.
- Publish content that answers real customer questions in your own expert voice.
Avoid
- Judging your marketing on sessions alone in a zero-click world.
- Chasing old ranking tricks while AI tools quote your competitors.
The specific mix that gets a business cited is different for every industry and market, and it changes as Google and the AI platforms update. That is where a partner who is watching it every week earns their keep.
